Apple is not the greatest in supporting what it considers to be old hardware and software. I think any upgrades you may have wished for iMovie8 would have required payment, but Apple pulls anything except the newest versions from its site. Now that they have gone to downloads only it puts users of older software in a real mess because it isn't like when you used to be able to go out and find old installer discs. I am not sure when iLife stopped being issued on discs and maybe if you're lucky you can find something like iMovie 9 (if such a thing exists) on a used installer disc. Of course then there's still the question if it is new enough to handle what you need for YouTube. Your ultimate answer may be to buy a newer computer so you can download the current iMovie.
I have recently got a mid 2012 Macbook Air which I installed Lion on. I am trying to update it to Mojave, but even though it is compatible, when downloading it in the App Store I get this error message:
Queenie: I tried your suggestion on an iMac using OS-X 10.7.5 but I could not get sound when I did the screen recording. I was able to do audio separately with QuickTime but either with internal or external mics I could not get sound. Do you know if sound is part of the standard screen capture?

With over 510 million conversions since 2006, as posted on their website, Zamzar is undoubtedly one of the best MTS-to-MP4 converters free to use. Along with supporting many file formats, it is easy to use, and you do not need to download any software as it is online-based. To use Zamzar, you do not need to open an account.
Though it's popularly known as a media player, VLC is also an MTS file converter. As an open-source platform that supports a wide range of video formats, you can use it for other conversion needs. With VLC, you are only required to download the software, but there are no subscription fees. Even though it's free to use, there are no invasive ads to worry about. The process is fairly straightforward, and with a few attempts, you'll nail it down.
Both online and free converters have their advantages and disadvantages. While MTS-to-MP4 converters for online use don't require you to download shady freeware or shareware, they usually have either file size restrictions or a limited number of formats. Free programs are generally lacking features and conversion speed compared to their paid counterparts but are perfect for converting small batches of files. Movavi Video Converter provides both conversion speed and reliability for a relatively small price and without a file size limit. Download the trial version and see for yourself!

Disco emits 3D animated smoke whenever the application is burning a disk. As of July 2011, the development and support of Disco have been officially discontinued, but you can still download this free DVD burner software for Mac from its home page:
